Oxygen Injection in Copper & Nickel Converter  [ Return towards  Metallurgy  ]

Oxygen is used in an oxidation process in Copper/Nickel converters. By injecting enriched air in the liquid matte, the sulphur combines into SO2 which is evacuated in the off-gases.

ALSI, the Air Liquide Shrouded concentric Injector (inside O2/annulus N2), has been designed to replace conventional tuyeres in the converter and help you to overcome operational problems including tuyere blockage and refractory erosion at the tuyere line.

Benefits

Permitted enrichment levels of up to 60% O2
Increased converter productivity
Reduction in volume of off-gases
Elimination of tuyere punching
Better treatment of solid (scrap and reverts)
Stronger off-gases

References

The benefits of the shrouded injector have already been demonstrated in Hoboken - UNICORE (Belgium), Falconbridge (Canada), TCI (Thailand)...
